HOLLYWOOD IN WWII
For those of us who love old movies and are WWII buffs, this past Memorial Day Weekend with all its movie re-runs was a treat. If you ever doubted the patriotic fervor that gripped the country during WWII, just scan this list and see how many Hollywood and TV personalities you recognize (and this list is not all-inclusive).
  • Don Adams, USMC, contracted malaria on Guadalcanal
  • Gene Autry, flight officer, Air Transport Command
  • Eddie Albert, US Navy, drove Amtracks in several Pacific invasions; landing in Saipan where he rescued stranded Marines from the beachhead. At Tarawa, he was wounded and lost most of his hearing and earned the Bronze Star.
  • James Arness, US Army, wounded at Anzio. Purple Heart and Bronze Star 
  • Humphrey Bogart, US Navy, wounded in WWI, tried to enlist in WWII but was turned down because of his age
  • Ernest Borgnine served in the US Navy for 12 years, joining before WWII
  • Mel Brooks, combat engineer, US Army, cleared German mines after the Battle of the Bulge; organized shows for US troops
  • Charles Bronson, US Army
  • Richard Burton, Royal Navy
  • Art Carney, US Army, landed in Normandy, July 1944, where he was hit  by mortar shrapnel
  • Julia Child served with OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in Ceylon and China
  • Jackie Coogan, US Army Air Corps, volunteered for hazardous duty, sent to India and Burma
  • Tony Curtis, US Navy, joined at age 17. In Tokyo Bay he watched surrender ceremonies from the USS Proteus
  • Ossie Davis, US Army
  • Kirk Douglas, US Navy
  • Charles Durning, US Army, landed at Omaha Beach in D-Day invasion; wounded in Battle of the Bulge; captured, escaped, and narrowly missed assassination at the Malmedy Massacre. Won 3 Purple Hearts and Silver Star.
  • Douglas Fairbanks Jr., US Navy, was a Commando raider sent on several land attack missions; helped organize forerunner of today's Navy Seals
  • Henry Fonda, US Navy.  Bronze Star for Valor.
  • Glenn Ford, US Navy. In addition to WWII service, he served in the reserves during the Korean War and Vietnam
  • Clark Gable, US Army Air Corps. Although beyond draft age, Clark Gable enlisted as a private in the Air Corps in August 1942 and flew operational missions over Europe in B-17s to obtain combat film footage
  • Alan Hale, US Coast Guard
  • Audrey Hepburn, as a child, was a courier for resistance fighters in Holland
  • William Holden, US Army 
  • Brian Keith, USMC, Aerial gunner
  • George Kennedy, US Army, served 16 Years 
  • Ted Knight, a combat engineer, was in an early unit to enter Berlin after the Russians had secured it
  • Burt Lancaster, US Army
  • Lee Marvin, US Marines, wounded in the battle of Saipan
  • Steve McQueen, USMC
  • Burgess Meredith, US Army Air Corps
  • David Niven, Royal Army
  • Caroll O’Connor, Merchant Marines
  • Jack Palance, US Army Air Corps, required facial reconstruction from injuries received when his B17 crash-landed in Britain
  • Tyrone Power, USMC pilot in the South Pacific
  • Jason Robards, Jr., US Navy, was a radioman on duty at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack
  • Ronald Reagan, US Army Air Corps. Because of a severe hearing loss, he was not allowed any flying duties, though he appeared in training films.
  • Carl Reiner, US Army, trained as a radio operator and interpreter and later toured the South Pacific in an entertainment unit
  • Don Rickles, US Navy, destroyer duty
  • Rod Serling, US Army paratrooper
  • Robert Stack, US Navy. Because of his expertise as an Olympic champion skeet shooter, he taught anti-aircraft gunnery.
  • Rod Stieger, torpedoman, US Navy, falsified his age to enlist at 16
  • Jimmy Stewart, US Army Air Corps
  • Eli Wallach, US Army Medical Corps
  • James Whitmore, USMC
